Akira Toriyama, the creator of the popular manga and anime series Dragon Ball, passed away. The news announced by his production studio on Friday. He was 68 years old.

Toriyama’s Bird Studio Statement:

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that Manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma,” said a statement posted on the official X account of the “Dragon Ball” franchise.

“It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm,” the statement attributed to Toriyama’s Bird Studio said.

“He would have many more things to achieve. However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world,” it added.

“We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.”

“Dragon Ball” stands as one of the best-selling and most influential manga series of all time.

Furthermore, Debuting in 1984, it has inspired numerous anime series, films, and video games.

The story follows Son Goku, a young boy who harnesses his powers by collecting magical Dragon Balls to aid him and his allies in defending Earth against malevolent foes.

Shueisha, the publishing house, expressed profound sadness at the sudden news of Toriyama’s passing.

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of Japan’s renowned “One Piece” manga franchise, lamented Toriyama’s untimely death, acknowledging the significant void it leaves behind.

Speaking about bagging the Best Director honor at Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 director Shota Goshozono said, “I am the director of Jujutsu Kaisen Shota Goshozono… thank you so much for giving me such a wonderful award.” “This is my first anime where I worked as a director so I didn’t know what to do but thanks to the producer and the team in the studio that helped us so much [which] brought us this win,” he further shared.

The animator also spoke about global excitement surrounding his work, saying, “I am in Japan so it’s helpful for me to know what people think all over the world. I can get the feedback directly from people in another country outside of Japan.” Goshozono further explained, “Like winning this award or social network allows me to know more people beyond Japan love this anime and they are talking about it online and that makes me happy.
